Apparently, some of the best sunsets in the world happen not too far from us in the beautiful city of Port Elgin/Southampton, Ontario (sorry, I have always thought of them as one city).  And, although I have spent some beautiful evenings there, I think our entire area, in general, has some of the most gorgeous evening skies in the world.  

Sauble Beach

Not far from Port Elgin/Southampton certainly has some incredible sunsets.  But so does Owen Sound.  The photo above was taken earlier in the week.   Even little old Leith gets some incredible ones.  And these are only a few of the places I have experienced.  No doubt, Wiarton, Tobermory, Meaford, and many other places do too.   But as much as I love a beautiful dusk sky, I don’t take a lot of sunset photos because truth be told, you can only capture a sunset in a few ways. So, what I prefer to do is capture something happening during the sunset. 

Like, stand up paddleboarding at Sauble Beach. Or capturing the crowd as they gather to watch the sunset. Or to find a unique object like these stacked rocks to silhouette in the dusk sky. Mundane objects that are often seen as blights take on a new look in the evening. And sometimes the evening sky can look like it’s on fire. Finally, one of the photography lessons I learned long ago was when you see something you find interesting, make sure you look in the other direction to see what you might be missing.  So, I also try to remember this when I am captivated by the sky.  Sometimes, with interesting results. So next time you are out taking photos of the sunset.  After you capture it, make sure you turn around.  You might be pleasantly surprised by what you see.
