Summer Festivals
The opening weekend of July, I had my first opportunity to take in and photograph the Mariposa Folk Festival in Orillia, Ontario, which is approaching its 60th year in existence. It was a beautiful weekend filled with fantastic music, lovely art, and delicious food. I’ve been told that it is considered the first festival of the summer festival season.

On the third weekend of August, I get to photograph Summerfolk, which is in its 44th year. It is considered the final weekend of the summer festival season. It is another fabulous weekend of music, art, and food on the shores of Georgian Bay.

Why is this important? It reminds us how short but incredibly beautiful the summer festival season is. It’s also a reminder to get out and take part in these events that bring our communities together.
If you weren’t down by the Owen Sound harbour last weekend, you’ve already missed Harbourfest, a local one-day festival that started last year.
But you still have many opportunities to take part in some great local events that range from the strange beauty of the Electric Eclectics Festival held on the Scotch Mountain on the August long weekend.
To the Emancipation Festival held on the same weekend in Owen Sound.
And we even have new and exciting festivals being added every year. This year, Rrampt and Mudtown Station are teaming up to bring us the Railyard Festival, also being hosted along the beautiful harbour of Owen Sound. I am really looking forward to this one. In my experience, the first year of a festival is often one of its best.
