I hate to be the bearer of bad news (or maybe you will think it is good news), but the chill in the air is telling me that we are approaching the end of summer here in Grey/Bruce. At times it seems hard to believe it has gone so fast. And at other times it feels like it has gone on forever (especially for those who have had children at home for 6 months now).
Part of the reason for this confusion might be that we are missing our annual traditions that have become milestones over the years. For me, the Summerfolk music and crafts festival is one of those moments. Although I love almost everything about the festival, it also signals that the end of August is near.
For many others in the area and beyond, the weeks following Summerfolk is their highlight. As the Summerfolk tents come down, the giant Fish tent goes up just north of Kelso Beach signalling the start of the annual Salmon Spectacular fishing derby.
As I am not much of a fisher person and having only ventured to the Fish tent once in my life, I can’t explain its significance. But I can tell you that it is clearly very important to many as hundreds of trucks pulling boats on trailers seem to appear out of nowhere.
And many hundreds pack the Fish tent every night.
Trailers and campers pop up all along the harbour.
And where there isn’t room for a trailer, you will likely see several fisher people with chairs and coolers spending their days trying to land the big one.
Although the Derby has been cancelled this year, no doubt the fish are still there waiting to be caught. Which is probably why I continue to see so many boats out on the water.
So, even though we don’t have our Salmon Spectacular this year, clearly there are still spectacular salmon to be caught. Best of luck to you if you are out to catch one. Just don’t think about how it also signifies the end of our summer.
All the best in September.
