Having just survived our first heat wave of the summer and, according to Environment Canada, about to enter our second soon, Wanda and I thought we would share some of our favourite places to beat the heat: Our favourite swimming holes.
As Owen Sound is surrounded by water in almost every direction – The Saugeen Peninsula and Georgian Bay to the North, Meaford and Nottawasaga Bay to the West and Sauble Beach and Lake Huron to the East – with countless lakes in between, there are a myriad of options when it comes to getting your toes, and more, wet. Below are some of our favourites.
As Wanda lives on the west side of Owen Sound, her choices come from that area. She loves to swim at Bass Lake, the Balmy Beach boat launch and French Bay.
Wiarton also has many beautiful spots to get into the water.
If swimming is not your thing, fishing is another option.
Not too far from Wiarton is beautiful Hope Bay and Rush Cove, which is not far from Lion’s Head.
And to the west, in between Sauble Beach and Port Elgin, is beautiful Southampton where you can head to the beach or jump off the pier.
As I live on the East side of the Bay, my favourite swimming and paddle boarding spots are much closer to me. In fact, they are all walking distance. The closest beach where I often launch my SUP is at Leith.
To the north of Leith is the Ainslie Wood Conservation Area which also features a beautiful stone beach.
And a little to the south of us is Hibou beach, probably the busiest of our 3 swimming spots.
With everyone staying closer to home this year, we are discovering that some of our “secret” swimming spots are not so secret anymore. Which is okay, as I don’t mind sharing. And we keep finding new ones.
And If I ever want to get away from the crowds, I just hop on my SUP and paddle out as far into the bay as I can, jump in and keep my head afloat. A little like life:).
Do you have any favourite swimming spots?
Please share them in the comments.
Stay Cool!
