The Music of the Sound

Growing up in Owen Sound, I had very little appreciation for its vibrant musical community.   Maybe it was because I was rebelling against my musical family – my father and his two siblings have a long history of music in the area.  My dad and aunt both played in the Salvation Army Band and the Owen Sound city band.  My uncle was a founding member of the Tombstones and plays in many local bands including Sounder and The Bearcats.  But despite this family connection, I ignored the local music scene, grew my mullet long and continued listening to Van Halen on my Walkman.

Did you see that show at the beer tent?

Summerfolk

Every year, on the third weekend of August, you will find thousands of people listening, dancing, singing, eating, drinking, THCing, swimming and many other -ings on the shores of Georgian Bay.  This annual Owen Sound event that draws so many is the Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival (locally know as “Summertoke”:)) and I have had the honour to know it now for over 25 years.

Welcome to Summer Festival Season

Summer Festivals

The opening weekend of July, I had my first opportunity to take in and photograph the Mariposa Folk Festival in Orillia, Ontario, which is approaching its 60th year in existence.  It was a beautiful weekend filled with fantastic music, lovely art, and delicious food.  I’ve been told that it is considered the first festival of the summer festival season.
