Inspiration for art comes from two things in nearly equal measure, the talent to portray beauty in any setting, and being surrounded by beauty.
Welcome to the great Grey Bruce area. We have an abundance of beauty, and thankfully an abundance of artists who seek out and make the effort to communicate that beauty.
And as luck would have it, here in Grey and Bruce counties we have people who appreciate art to varying degrees from the appreciative to the passionate.
We have people who enjoy looking at art, people who purchase art, and people who have enriched the artistic community by creating events and opportunities for art to be shown.
Consider this. There are individual art shows like the one opening at the Ginger Press Bookstore on Thursday, May 10th exhibiting the works of local artist extraordinaire, Andrée Levie-Warrilow. Though not its primary function, the Ginger Press is no stranger to art shows and is the perfect intimate setting for Andrée's work, pieces that welcome the viewer in with the feeling of a good story being told in a friendly kitchen. If you miss the opening, be sure to check out the show while it is available.
Once your appetite has been whetted, consider some of the other events of single and multiple showings on offer from the bottom of the twin counties to the tip of Tobermory.
For instance ...
Water Street in Paisley is closed to traffic on July 15th, but luckily it's open to artists and the art loving pedestrians when the town offers “Artists on the River” as its annual contribution to the artistic culture of our area. The event is open from 10AM to 4PM and proves to be a subtle savoury and sweet seasoning added to the flavour of Grey Bruce art.
An annual regular and one of the largest rural shows around, the Bruce Peninsula Art Show, which has moved this year to the Lion's Head arena, features some of our area's most prolific and talented artists, many of them returning each year because of the show's popularity.
This year the BPAS is being held August 3rd through 6th, and as is their custom, admission is free.
Had enough? Hardly!
On July 20th, 21st, and 22nd, Clarksburg offers “Artsburg Days” with a celebration of all things art. They have demos, art shows, edible art, live music and even a paint battle. (One wonders what that might be, but there's only one real way to find out for sure, right?)
Is there more?
Of course there is, and you can find them online if you look. But I want to point out that there are innumerable private, semi private, and public galleries around also.
Consider the Tom Thomson Art Gallery in the heart of Owen Sound where many works by Tom as well as the members of the Group Of Seven and other important artists reside.
And a walk of less than three blocks from the Thom will get you to The Artists' Coop, or Santa Fe Gallery, both of which are worth the temptation you'll endure while meandering through the displayed pieces. Fight that temptation, but not too hard, art is worth the price, if you don't believe me, frame your credit card and hang it on the wall and see how much enjoyment you get from that.
Moving right along
Since we've started moving about in search of those pieces that speak to us, don't forget that numerous studio tours go on all over Grey and Bruce. There's the Bruce Peninsula Artists' Studio Tour , and the Saugeen Autumn Leaves Studio Tour to name just two.
But not least on our list, is the Walters Falls Group of Artists Show held on August 24th, 25th, and 26th and featuring still more of our region's premiere artists.
If you like art, if you feel at home among canvases of beauty represented in the work of talented local artists, or if you're just looking for that one piece that speaks to you and has a home waiting for it in the form of a blank spot on your wall, then the culture of Grey & Bruce's art community is where you should be looking.
I promise our two counties' artistic offerings are a feast for the senses, and will not disappoint.
